Baccarat: A Continuing History

Baccarat is one of the most widely played card games today; whether it be online or at a real casino. However, many do not exactly know how this game exactly evolved to what it is today. Within its history, one will find a lot of things that were assumed by people, but are not exactly the truth.

The game’s history dates back up to the Etruscan civilization, which was a forerunner of the Roman civilization. The legend involved the nine ancient gods, a young woman, and a nine sided die. According to this, a woman was selected each year to throw the die. Depending on the resulting figure, the woman would either: become a priestess; or live a normal life; or, lastly, drown in the ocean. The game itself was originally thought of to have originated from France, hence its French name. However, it actually stems from an Italian word for zero, the “baccara”. It is known to have originated from Italy in the 15th century, and is connected to Felix Falguerein, a famous Italian gambler. The first games are said to have used tarot cards rather than the traditional card deck.

While Italy may be the birth place of baccarat, the game became widely known in France during the Renaissance. The first two variations of the game, Chemin de Fer and the Banque, were designed by the French. During the time of Napoleon, the game was banned in France but was picked up by English nobles. Along with the coming of the French and English in America, the game was introduced, as well as Faro, Roulette, and Blackjack. During the 1950’s, casino owners reinvented the game by adding new rules, thus the third variation of the game, the “Punto Banco”, was born. The “mini-baccarat” was also introduced, the “punto Banco” played in a smaller table, with less formality and lower betting limits. In the “mini-baccarat”, the casino dealer handles all the cards.

The game is also popular today due to the influences of James Bond and the Beatles. In the first Bond novel, the Casino Royale, James Bond fights an opponent in a casino in Monte Carlo at a baccarat game. The Beatles, on the other hand, used the game in their movie “A Hard Day’s Night”, where Paul McCartney’s grandfather wins at the game and pays it to his bar tab.

Along with the insurgence of the internet, the introduction of the online casino breathed new life into the game. A new audience was caught entranced by the simplicity of the game. While many still prefer the formality of a casino, there are those who prefer the comfort of their own home, minus the tuxedo and formal gown. Almost all major online casinos offer all the variations of the baccarat, so one may play whatever variation they are comfortable with. New versions of the game are being developed as the baccarat’s history is still continuing to this day, as more and more people bring new ideas onto the table.
